TRADE BUILD SETTLE

Your adventurous settlers seek to tame the remote but rich isle of Catan. Start by revealing Catan's many harbours and regions: pastures, fields, mountains, hills, forests, and desert. The random mix crates a different board virtually every game. No two games are the same!

Embark on a quest to settle the isle of Catan! Guide your settlers to victory by clever trading and cunning development. Use resource combinations - grain, wool, ore, brick, and lumber - to buy development cards and build roads, settlements, and cities. Acquire your resources through trades, cards, or luck dice (even outside your turn).

But beware! Someone might cut off your road or buy a monopoly. And you never know when the wily robber might steal some of your precious gains.

Catan (aka The Settlers of Catan) has been awarded with "Game of the Year," "Hall of Fame," and even "Game of the Century" honours in Germany, the United States, and a host of other countries worldwide. An international favourite, it's been called the "Perfect Social Game."

Catan contains:

  • 19 unique hexagonal terrain tiles
  • 6 coastal frame pieces
  • 9 extra harbour pieces
  • 20 wooden settlements
  • 16 wooden cities
  • 60 wooden roads
  • 95 Resource cards
  • 25 development cards
  • 4 building costs cards
  • 2 special bonus cards
  • 18 number tokens
  • 2 six-sided dice
  • 1 wooden robber pawn
  • simple rules and almanac

Reviews Review Game

Review
Catan is a classic in more ways than one. It popularised modern Euro style board games in the mid 90's and beyond, and is still widely played and appreciated today. It is also a pretty good game, with players going after resources in order to expand their civilisation and build 10 victory points worth of 'stuff'. Players must place their initial settlements in strategic locations so that they earn a good variety of resources when the dice are rolled each turn. These resources are exchanged for either roads, settlements, cities or players can buy development cards which basically give special powers, points or bonuses. Rounds continue until someone has 10 victory points. Having played this classic a couple more times over Christmas, I have to say the game has stood the test of time well, it is still enjoyable although I prefer the more modern variants, notably the Settlers of America version. The reason is that a few of Catan's shortcomings are addressed in later variants - the fact that when it's not your turn you cannot build or buy, only trade with the active player. Also if you don't get any resources on the die roll, you get nothing in the original Catan, which can be quite frustrating! These are changed for the better in Settlers of America. The original Catan is still well worth a look for new gamers and certainly benefits from a few expansions to change up the gameplay.
